2007 Catch of the Season

Do devout Baptists have more fun fishing?
Well you might want to ask Ken as he was blessed with spiritual fish catching magic
July 07. Using my Extreme drift fishing techniques covering the 35' water column using live "A-Bait" netted earlier, Ken hooked and landed Cobia, Kings, Blues and Sharks . We were about 3 miles out within sight of the beach. At one point we had three Cobia on at once with a very big and rare Tiger shark circling. As Ken fought the two with biggest shoulders, juggling two poles like a circus performer, I managed to get the smallest one in close and let him 'hang'n troll' in close to port rear quarter. Then assisted Ken with his dual wrestling match. We feared the tan and striped Tiger", which was plainly visible on the surface (estimated between 7-9"), would turn in and tear off at least one if not all the Cobia. The idea was, the smaller one hung off the back would be the "tempting tiger bait". But to my delight ( and I'm sure Ken's), this saw toothed man/fish eating monster never came, staying on his wolf like circular bearing. Phew!, this was like MMA, UFC and Pride fighting champion match combined. But No fear! Ken came out a triple knockout winner in this very long round! All eventually all of were boated, picture quickly taken, then released including the two over 34". Subsequently another cobia, a good sized King, blues and sharks were landed. Unbelievably, he even hooked up with the Tiger on our King float rig. Using my Extreme light tackle rigs, as always, 17lb test line, inshore Ugly Sticks and bait runner reels; gear that obviously can do the job even when outranked by the hungry saltwater predators we landed; but definitely outmatched by the Tiger. The short few minutes of having that magnificent animal on in close was a little icing on a huge fishing cupcake of a day. Towards the end of trip, a 4-5' black tip and spinner shark where landed a few hundred yards off the beach, so he wasn't totally shark-less. We actually went in a little early..
In the past sometimes I jokingly say to clients as we get underway " Make an offering to the Sea Gods for a good day". Now, no kidding around, Ken has me saying a very devoted prayer when departing on our Extreme Fisherman adventures.
