You may be deciding if you want to break away from the golf course, or tennis courts for some saltwater fly fishing. I broke away, and I keep returning every opportunity I get. A business convention drew me to Philadelphia, but little saltwater fly fishing was offered in the area. It was a bit out of the way, but after a web search I found Captain Pete’s, Extreme Fisherman, web site, and called. After a talk with Capt. Pete I knew I would enjoy my stay in Myrtle Beach, SC. You might think this was extreme, but when you get the saltwater fly fishing bug nothing gets in your way.
Don’t pass up a chance to fly fish saltwater if you don’t have all the equipment. Just go fish, it will convince you to purchase all you need. When you catch your first saltwater fish on a fly, you will be impressed with the speed and power these fish seem to have over fresh water fish.
I have found that a travel 8 weight rod matched with a reel that can hold at least 250 yards of backing, and good breaking system is a good set up. Lots of rod and reel manufacturers make great products, with lifetime warranties. If the budget will allow you need more than one 8 weight, go for it. I currently have 3. If I only had one saltwater line it would be a weight forward intermediate sink line. This will sink a bit, and if I need to go deeper I would just add a sinking tip section. A floating line and fast sink line will come in handy. Conditions change and being able to change quickly just adds to the enjoyment.
As to flies, keep it simple when you first start out. Deceiver and Clouser patterns that look like bait fish are very effective. I like a white belly with a chartreuse back, and a little flash. Use barb-less hooks, it is easier on the fish and easier on you. By all means ask Capt Pete for his recommendations, no matter where your fishing in salt water. I have fished many different places, but it is hard to beat local knowledge.
When fly fishing I tend to cover up with long sleeve light weight fishing clothing, and cover up the rest of me with sun block, and a big hat. One key piece of equipment is polarized sun glasses. Having a spare pair is not a bad idea. Plus rain gear, medical item, and plenty of flies.
Myrtle Beach is a great golf destination, but people have not discovered it as a fly fishing spot. A fantastic family outdoor vacation spot with water, golf, tennis, and now fly fishing. This could be another great outing with the kids. Capt Pete particular enjoys teaching novices.
