Top Catch of Season Extreme Fisherman on Fly 08'

2008 turned in another great season fishing on the water's of the Myrtle Beach area.
On most trips we fish both near shore, ocean bound, conditions permitting, and inshore. We cover as much water as possible to insure that we offer the best opportunity for our clients to have a good day on our hunt for fish of many different species. Frequently as part of each adventure on the "outside" we head for Paradise reef, a nearby artificially created structure by the South Carolina DNR for fisherman. Here we target everything form Spanish/King Mackerel, Cobia, Spade fish, flounder, sharks and much, much more.
One species , Spade fish, when high % conditions present for this fast fighter, are heavily targeted by us as they are one of the ultimate Extreme Fisherman experiences on our light tackle. These are structure hugging black and white striped predators. Most often are caught by chumming them, bottom up. ( Although on calmer days may be seen near surface). If successful drawing in, they will literally circle your boat on the bite. Twenty, thirty, fifty or more, just sub service, 0-5 ft will continue feeding; especially if you can keep chumming and hold them in. The action on our 10lb test light tackle inshore rods and reels is non-stop fast with heavy pulls. You will find your self losing count after the first thirty or so on a good day, keeping only the biggest of the clan.
While we had several trips where we caught a handful, our best bites were other fighting species. But as far as throwing a hook and feather one trip won the title for 2008 for Catch of Season:
Special Extreme Fisherman Kudos to Adam as he landed over 10 on my 8WT mid flex Trident fly rod. We started with a 1/0 white/white Clouser. Adam did have a difficult time as Marvin was getting all the hookups on spin tackle with fresh bait. Then Wham! He had his first on the Clouser, definitely a deep digging spade, big time hookup. Once landed with high five's I then switched the pattern to a very small white woolly bugger type imitating shrimp. Unbelievable! He started getting one hookup after another. This was a first for a fly client on my boat. Catching spade fish on a fly rod! What a trip!

Partner Marvin caught many, many on my light tackle 10lb test rod and reel, but he eventually targeted the clearly visible Big Mama of this voracious feeding pack. After 20 mins he landed her after a rod screaming nerve wrenching fun filled fight. No question this fish was the Alpha leader. She was as wary as a wolf. Released to fight another day!
If you are lucky enough to be out there on the right "Spade fish day" and you have or go with a guide that has the know how and wants to go to "work", Spade fish will give you constant Extreme Fisherman Fun as it did with these three crews!!!
